It shows up as a sigh when the worship set runs long, a complaint when the pastor didn&#8217;t notice you, a sulk when the prayer wasn&#8217;t answered on schedule. It sounds like &#8220;I deserve better than this.&#8221;</span></p>
<h4 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Its name is entitlement. And it is the exact opposite of the gospel because the Gospel starts with what you didn&#8217;t earn.</span></h4>
<h4 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #000000; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: 400; white-space: pre-wrap;">Grace, by definition, is undeserved. Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?&#8221; (1 Corinthians 4:7, KJV).</span></h4>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Read that slowly. Your breath, your salvation, your gifts, your calling, your family, your next meal. Every one of them was received. None was manufactured by your own merit. The entitled heart forgets where things came from. The grateful heart never stops remembering.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We didn&#8217;t come to Jesus with a résumé. We came bankrupt. &#8220;While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us&#8221; (Romans 5:8, KJV). If you walked into the Kingdom on a gift, you can&#8217;t strut through it on a sense of rights.</span></p>
<h1 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Ten Healed, One Returned</span></h1>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">In Luke 17, Jesus heals ten lepers. Ten men get their lives back: their skin restored, their families reopened to them, their place in society returned. And only one turns around, falls at Jesus&#8217; feet, and gives thanks.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Jesus asks a piercing question: &#8220;Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?&#8221;</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The nine weren&#8217;t wicked. They got what they wanted and moved on. That&#8217;s what entitlement does. It receives the miracle and skips the Miracle-Worker. It treats God like a vending machine instead of a Father.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">And notice what happened to the one who came back. Jesus told him, &#8220;Thy faith hath made thee whole.&#8221; Nine were cleansed. One was made whole. Gratitude doesn&#8217;t just honor God. It completes something in us that the blessing alone never could.</span></p>
<h1 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Older Brother Problem</span></h1>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We usually focus on the prodigal in Luke 15, but the older brother may be the more dangerous character, because he looks like the faithful one. He stayed home. He worked hard. He never left.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">And when grace showed up for someone else, he exploded: &#8220;Lo, these many years do I serve thee&#8230; and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.&#8221;</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">That&#8217;s entitlement wearing church clothes.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">He had served for years, but he&#8217;d been keeping score the whole time. The father&#8217;s answer should stop every one of us in our tracks: &#8220;Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.&#8221;</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">He had everything the entire time. Entitlement blinded him to it. He was living next to abundance and starving in his attitude.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Many believers are in the same place. Faithful in attendance, active in ministry, and quietly resentful that God hasn&#8217;t paid up yet. Beloved, if you&#8217;re serving God to collect wages, you&#8217;ve misunderstood the house you live in.</span></p>
<h1 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Grumbling Is a Spiritual Issue, Not a Personality Trait</span></h1>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Israel saw the Red Sea split, ate bread from heaven, and drank water from a rock, and they still complained their way around the wilderness for forty years. Paul later warned the Church directly: don&#8217;t murmur as some of them murmured (1 Corinthians 10:10).</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">We like to call complaining &#8220;just venting&#8221; or &#8220;being honest.&#8221; Scripture calls it something more serious. Grumbling is unbelief with a voice. It says, &#8220;God, You haven&#8217;t been good enough to me.&#8221; A whole generation missed their Promised Land not because God failed them, but because they couldn&#8217;t stop rehearsing what they thought they were owed.</span></p>
<h1 dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 20pt; margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-size: 20pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Jesus Had Every Right, and Laid Them Down</span></h1>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">If anyone ever had a legitimate claim to entitlement, it was Jesus. He was equal with God. He owned the universe. Yet Philippians 2 says He &#8220;made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant.&#8221;</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The King of Glory washed feet. He had every right to be served, and He came to serve. If the Son of God laid down His rights, on what basis do we pick ours up?</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The mind of Christ is not &#8220;What am I owed?&#8221; It&#8217;s &#8220;What can I give?&#8221;</span></p>

Gratitude isn&#8217;t something you wait to feel. It&#8217;s something you choose, and feelings follow obedience. Paul wrote some of his most joy-filled words from a prison cell. Paul and Silas sang hymns at midnight with their backs bleeding, and the foundations shook. Thanksgiving in the dark isn&#8217;t denial. It&#8217;s warfare.</span></p>
